February trip to NYC

Because of all the snow, we were going crazy with cabin fever before Feb. break even began.  I wanted to do something cool for Feb. break, but it seemed like everything kind of fell apart with all of the snow.  Monday morning I was running with my friend Clairon and told her how I had planned to go to NYC with the kids, but wasn't sure it would be safe by myself.  She was super kind and offered to take Kate for the day so I would only have kids over 5.  It was great!  I wasn't sure we would have any fun, but it was lots of fun.  And it was great not to have a stroller or any of the other baby gear (or to have to carry anyone).

This picture is driving to the cloisters.  This sewage truck was double parked and we had to wait for it to finish so we could get down the street in our big van.  I must brag about my driving in the big city with the big van.  I'm actually not too bad and I even ended up driving right through manhattan a little later in the week too because John really wanted to see the Empire State Building.

Our plan for the day was to drive to the cloisters, park the car, ride the subway to the 911 memorial, eat lunch and then return to the cloisters to visit.  That's pretty much what we did and it was a really great memorable time for my family.

The subway ride.  The kids kind of felt like they were on an amusement ride and of course insisted on standing up and holding the rail.  I'm sure the regulars thought we were a little ridiculous.
In front of one of the tower fountains.  It is amazing how big the fountains are and was really touching to look at them.  Each name is engraved/cut out of the metal in the handrail around the fountain.
Nathan on the subway.  Sorry this picture is out of order.
The giant building they are building to replace the twin towers.  It will be the tallest building in NYC when it is done.  It's pretty tall already.
 Pizza after visiting the memorial.
Nathan, Michelle, John and Samantha in front of the survivor tree.  I think this was one of the only trees left after the collapse of the towers?  Not sure what the story exactly was, I can't remember if the tree was in this courtyard or if it was somewhere else and they moved it.
Michelle eating pizza.  This pizza was really good and a great price for lunch in NYC.  After lunch we hopped back on the subway and toured the cloisters.  My kids did a pretty good job there.  I thought we would only last for a few minutes, but we stayed until closing and they really enjoyed the little scavenger hunt on the brochure.  I really apreciated the unicorn tapestries.  Michelle had a good time looking at them with me.  Now I want to take them back to visit the MET and central park and lots of other fun stuff in the city.  It was a great time!

Joseph Smith Memorial

So clear back in October, we had the priveledge of going to the Joseph Smith Memorial in Sharon, VT.  It has been on my bucket list for awhile, so when someone from the ward was organizing a camping trip to camp Joseph next door, we just had to join.  It wasn't the most convenient weekend for us.  Joseph's good friend and neighbor Max was having his bar mitzvah that weekend and we had promised we would be there.  It started in the morning so silly me thought it would be over by noon and we could be on our way to Vermont and set up camp before dinner.  In actuality, the bar Mitzvah lasted until 5:00 pm.  We pulled the kids out at about 3:00 because we had to get on the road.  The bar mitzvah was so much fun!  I've never been to one before so it was a great cultural experience and I was proud to say that Joey and John were great dancers.  They loved playing the games the dj set up and helped lift the chair in the traditional chair dance.  I was surprized they could lift so much weight.  It was pretty awesome.

On to the trip.  We drove to Sharon and got to camp when it was dark and freezing.  We loaded our stuff into a handcart and dropped it off into two cabins: one for the boys and one for the girls.  It was unseasonably cold and we all wore our coats and gloves and hats to make sure we were warm enough.  In order to stay warm kate and I slept in the same bed and Michelle and Samantha shared a bed as well.  Unfortunately, Michelle and Samantha were on the top bunk and Michelle fell off in the middle of the night.  Luckily she wasn't hurt and went back to sleep easily.  We enjoyed a nice breakfast in the morning.  Because we were so far away from the closest ward (it was their stake conference) we decided to just have our own sacrament meeting and went to enjoy the sites.  The guides were really interesting and we were able to look around and learn a lot.  Unfortunately it was raining so we didn't get to take the golf cart tour around the entire site, but got to see the monument and a couple of new church movies.  Even though it was a little rushed am really glad we were able to go up there and see this church history site.  There was definately a lot to see and the camp site was great!

The Blizzard of 2013

So we got a lot of snow.   Hamden was reported at getting 40 inches of snow in one night!!!  Isn't that crazy?  The snowplows couldn't keep up and subsequently most of the town was snowed in for several days.  The snow fell on Friday, and we didn't get dug out until Tues.!!! Isn't that crazy?????!!!  It made for some great guilt free movie days and of course some great snow caves.  Unfortunately, our sleds were left outside and were covered for days until we were finally able to dig them out.  Now 2 weeks later, the kids are finally back in school and there is still snow on the ground.  It was pretty crazy!
John is basically in the road in this picture.  It was crazy because we couldn't even walk out of our neighborhood the snow was so deep.
Samantha and Kate crawling into the snow cave.
Nathan standing up in the snow.
The sidewalk in between our neighbor's house and ours.  They graciously lent us their snow blower, but even then we had to shovel to get the snow ready for the snow blower.
Michelle and Nathan.

Interestingly enough, the week of the blizzard was Valentine's day, John's birthday party, a party we had scheduled for activity days and the week after was Feb. break , so there were alot of things rescheduled.  And then after a week of being home and finally feeling like we could get on with our lives it was Feb. break so we couldn't quite get back to normal yet.  But, thanfully we were able to have a nice Feb. break and it was just a releif to get out of the house and have fun with some friends.

Joseph

So, in the last post I mentioned that Joseph was trying out for the football team.  . . .he didn't make it, but there were 100 kids trying out for 30 spots, so he didn't feel too bad about that.  One of his friends that tried out had been playing for 7 years and didn't make it. . . . sports are just really competitive here.  I think he will make the jazz band though.  That's what he's trying out for next.  I talked to the band teacher at the open house last Thursday and he said that Joseph plays beautifully and sounded really positive about it.  I'm sure there won't be 100 kids trying out for trumpet in the jazz band though ;)  I just wanted to post several pictures through the last year of Joseph.  Since this is my scrapbook . . . . . The above picture is at Joseph's ordination to the priesthood when he turned 12.  I know very dignified.  Justin bought him a new suit and it was huge!! but there wasn't time to return it and get a normal size, so he just wore it huge for a few months, and now 10 months later it fits him perfectly.  Don't worry, I've already claimed the rights to take John when he gets his new suit.
This is a picture of Joseph's first temple trip in Dec. 2011.  It was our ward temple day and Justin and I were both able to go.  We did a babysitting swap with some other families.  It was so neat to see him get baptized for the first time.
These are the cupcakes from his birthday last year.  They played lots of fun games in the gym at the church.  It was such an easy party to plan which was great!
Our family + Janae and Tyson and family + Mom and dad Rowberry at Joseph's ordination.
Poison Ivy on the face.  Joseph got poison ivy 3 times this summer.  Twice on the face.  Ouch!  I still haven't managed to ever get it.  He pretty much always comes home with it after a boy scout hike.
Here he is playing around with a lobster that I cooked.  It was one of our funnest meals this summer. the girls especially had a fun time playinng with the lobsters before I threw them in the pot.  Ity was delicious!

6th grade graduation

Joseph graduated from 6th grade last spring.  It was pretty crazy.  He was asked to speak at the assembly and didn't tell me or Justin until the night before.  I was panicked thinking he hadn't prepared anything, but luckily he had and it was delivered nicely.  He also insisted on wearing a suit.  He looked pretty snazzy.  John was the only drummer playing pomp and circumstance in the 5th grade band while the kids walked in.  He did really well and didn't miss a beat.

I can't believe I have a middle schooler now.   So far it's fun.  Football tryouts are tomorrow and I really hope Joseph is able to get on the team, though I'm a little doubtful.  There are only 30 spots and 100 people are trying out.  Joey has a great attitude though, and he's prepared to give it his best.  Keep your fingers crossed!
Jordan, Joseph and Max at the brunch after graduation.
Kids getting up to recieve their awards.
Robert, Max, Nick, Joey, and John the first few weeks of summer, just before our landlord made us take down the trampoline.  It's been really rough finding fun things to do outside without the tramp, but we're figuring it out.  We recently made a cool skateboard swing that has gotten a lot of use.
Kyra, Samantha, and Kate on the slip n slide.

Can't believe summer is already over and fall is almost here.

The Hill Cumourah Pageant

Here are a few pictures from our family trip to Palmyra this summer.  We went up Friday night, pitched a tent in the dark and spent Saturday and Sunday visiting church history sites and playing.  When we woke up Saturday morning, we realized there was a lake at the campsite and canoes and kayaks we could use.  I hadn't really realized this so only about half of us had swimming suits.  Regardless, we jumped in fully dressed.  The lake was very rocky and the missionaries that ran the park urged us all to wear our shoes in as well so we wouldn't cut our feet.  So most of us had soggy shoes too.  After the kayaking, we cooked our lunch over a fire in searing heat and put on dry clothes.

We headed out to see the church history sites and ran into Jay and Janece Woods from Basin City at the sacred grove.  After the sites, we grabbed a picnic dinner and went to the hill cumourah pageant.  Surprizingly, Justin's cousins were in the pageant and we had a nice little visit with them and got to see them perform.  It was really good.  After the pageant, it was another late night getting to the tent in the dark and falling right to sleep.  It rained during the night, but our tent kept us relatively dry with only a few leaks.  It dried up just long enough for us to make breakfast in the morning and then the rain began to fall again.  It was really discouraging to try and get all the kids showered and dressed in their church clothes with all of the dirty mud and rain.  I was about ready just to give up and stay in the tent until the rain stopped.  There was thunder and lightening and it was really pouring.  A few minutes in the rain would completely drench us.  Justin found some plastic to use as an umbrella and escorted us all to the van.  I was pretty self concious going to church as we were all a little dirty and smelly and I had accidentally left my church shoes at home and had to wear my stinky, drippy tennis shoes from the lake the day before.  By the time we were all in the car, we were about 20 minutes late for church.  I was feeling pretty embarrassed, but as we walked into the chapel, my feelings completely changed.  The chapel was brimming and the curtains had been opened spilling out into the gym.  IT looked like stake conference there were so many people.  Some were dressed perfectly for Sunday, and others like me, were wearing tennis shoes, or shorts or jeans.  It was really a beautiful sight to see so many people reagardless of their circumstances or dress gathering to worship Jesus Christ.  It really humbled me and reminded me that the Lord looketh on the heart and not at our outward appearance and that he wants us to come to Him even if we aren't perfect.  IT was really the most spiritual part of my weekend.

After church we went to the David Whitmer farm and saw the Steele's from Mt. Home ID.  THey were volunteering there for 2 weeks.  It was great to talk with them about all the people from our old ward in ID.  after that we struck camp and headed back home.  It was a great weekend.

cub scouts

I have been cub master in my ward now for over a year.  It's a fun calling, though I don't really like being in charge of everything.  This picture was from a service project we did at camp cedarcrest.  I have a fairly good relationship with the guy who runs the place and we have helped out the last couple of years at their annual clean up day.  So far this year we have gone swimming, sold lots of cookbooks, gone to day camp, earned lots of different requirements, held pine wood derby and blue and gold banquet, helped with a food drive teamed up with another ward's cub program, lost and recruited several new leaders, and had a ton of fun.

It's been fun to get to know these boys and their families and have fun with them.  Cub scouts are great becasue they are usually really easy to please.  As long as you make treats and let them run around at the end, they have a great time.
